Sunday on Mt Evans

Sam and I drove up to Mt Evans. It's nice to visit when not beat from biking up! She took a couple of great shots! On the drive up we noticed the Aspens starting to change colors, two weeks from now should be just about peak colors. Photo of the flower was taken at the shore of Summit Lake (elev 13,000ft), the two lakes are from a glacier that melts down the valley. There is a trail the follows down the valley. That would be a great hike, but what about the car? That's most def a one way hike! Click on the valley picture to see it, really does it justice....

Tikal Ants

On our second trip to Tikal, we notice two different ant trails; one large black ants and the other smaller leave cutter ants. They finally came to an intersection and the smaller ants had a tough time crossing the faster bigger black ant highway. Jay and I watched them for a long time, once in a while picking one up by the leave and setting them on the other side. Here's the video of them trying to cross. Finally, Jay made a bridge from a twig, and they used it! Tikal is amazing for all of the different worlds they live under the rainforest. It's not a Cohen Brothers film by a long shot, it's actually one of the first I did with our digital camera. Watch and you will see one of the leave cutters make it through!

Sheepherding Championship

On our way back from Buffalo, WY we stopped off in Kaycee for the world championship sheep herding contest. These border collies herded two groups of sheep (one dog at a time)through three gates, around the dog owner and then peeled two sheep from the herd. all within 10-15 minutes. Dogs from across the US and Canada made the final 10. It was really kewl to watch. Great way to end the holiday weekend and an awesome weekend of biking!

Cycling in WY

Tisdale Divide, Buffalo WY

We went to Buffalo for the Labor day weekend. I took my bike and enjoyed 3 days of biking on open roads an no cars. First day headed out on the old state hwy 87. It goes from Buffalo to Kaycee. Great rolling hills, no traffic! Went an hour without seeing a single car. I went up and over the Tisdale Divide. Took a couple of photos of the divide and a sample of the rolling hills that i was riding. Saw everything from wild turkeys, antelope, hawks, pheasants to deer. A trio of deer ran along side of me then cut right in front and sailed over a fence.

The Tisdale Divide is a major scene for the Johnson County Cattle Wars (cattle barons vs sheep farmers). Click on the photo for a larger image to read the history.
